I’ve recently been looking back at images of groups of friends ahead of an upcoming commission. I always enjoy working one-on-one with someone, getting a dialogue going, finding out something about how they feel they want to appear to the camera, how they need to see themselves. That is rarely possible when you work with a group of people. Yet when you look back at the images you very often find there is someone who your camera seems to lean towards, someone who seems to look into you directly. That’s certainly the case here. These images were taken in Dunedin back in 2001. These teenage girls, members of a School rock band, will all be in their early thirties by now. It didn’t produce the kind of band images I had envisaged but, looking back after 15 years, one person stood out. One person who was looking at me as I looked at them.
