Poet Sleeping

Here is a ‘classic’ image. This has featured in many of my small exhibitions over the years. It was taken in 1989 in London of a dear friend from University. She was (and is indeed) an artist and we talked about how she would like to be seen depicted. It was an intensively hot day and the room, very bohemian, rich autumnal colours, an old sofa covered in a warm rug, a large wooden chest as a coffee table, made for a perfect setting. I was also keen to pay some homage to the great Auguste Rodin’s ‘The Danaid, 1889‘ having done something earlier in a piece entitled ‘After Rodin (1987)

I think at the point when I had taken this image she had actually fallen asleep, and having seen her notebook open, I thought this felt more like an image of a poet rather than an artist.
